What are Functional Capacity Evaluations?

Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE) or Physical Capacity Evaluations (PCE) are done in order to provide an objective measure of a patient’s/client’s safe functional abilities compared to the physical demands of work.

Why do FCE’s?

FCE’s quantify safe functional abilities, and serve as a pivotal resource for returning to work, job placement decisions, disability evaluations, determination of work function, intervention and treatment planning, case management, and case closure for work related injuries.

When should FCE’s be done?

  • When a patient reaches their Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI) or when a plateau in physical therapy is observed
  • After participating in Work Hardening/Work Conditioning program
  • FCE’s should be done as part of an Independent Medical Examination (IME)
  • Who can perform FCE’s?
